TO PHONE OR NOT TO PHONE...THAT IS THE QUESTION

I hope this will be the last in my series of 'poor me, my kid moved out' blogs.

The truth is that there is a great deal to say FOR the empty nest. Last night I didn't stay up waiting for him to come home. I didn't phone to ask what he wanted for supper. And, I wasn't standing in the window looking for him driving in the rain.

Now all I have to figure out is whether or not to phone him. Normally, we would talk at least once a day...coordinating everything. And, just for the fun of talking to each other.

Yesterday, his first day at work, I sat on my hands. I didn't phone in the morning to wish him good luck. I didn't phone him during the morning to see how he was. And, I didn't phone him late afternoon to say all of the above.

I remember my first job interview. I was sitting across from the principal when the secretary came in and said that I had a phone call. Me? With my heart beating and my pulse making strange sounds in my ears, I excused myself and went to the outer office to pick up the phone. It was Bubbie Channah A'H calling to ask if I took my umbrella because it was raining out!!!

I come by it naturally. And all those years I swore I wasn't going to be my mother!!! As the 2,000 Year Old Man says: We mock the things we are to be!

Then at nearly six p.m. HE CALLED ME!!! YAHOOOOO.

For now, my modus vivendi is: sit on my hands and tough it out. The kid is the same age as I was when I moved to Jerusalem and then we didn't even have house phones!!!

Okay My Sweet Son The Lawyer. Have a great day.

Do you think he thinks I don't love him any more? That I don't care because I'm not phoning him? Does he feel abandoned?

As my friend Rena would say, "Get a grip on yourself, girl!"

This isn't easy. There isn't a manual.

You know the old joke about the son who phones his mother and asks how she is? She tells him she's a little weak. Why he asks. And she answers," I didn't eat anything for three days. In case you phoned I didn't want to miss your call."

Even Bubbie Channah A'H didn't think up that one.

Next time I think I'll tell you all about my life as Free Willie!

Have a great day...stay safe...and thanks for dropping in.
